Journey of Hope: Support for Rohingya

Since 2017, over 700,000 Rohingya refugees have crossed over from Myanmar to Bangladesh due to ethnic and religious conflict. Spreeha is doing our part in helping refugees in the Cox Bazaar camps get access to the critical services they need through our programs. Our program model remains similar to our other projects; we aim to create a positive long-lasting impact on the Rohingya community through healthcare, counseling, education and awareness.

Healthcare

Spreeha has established a health clinic in the camp, providing primary and maternal & child healthcare services daily except on Fridays and government holidays. We provide essential drugs and screening tests at our clinic to ensure the general health and wellbeing of the served population. Spreeha is also conducting community awareness programs in the community, using health educators to train the community on the following topics:

  • Health and hygiene

  • Safe drinking water and basic sanitation practices

  • Contraception

  • Sexually transmitted disease prevention

Education

Working together with Rohingya community members, Spreeha has established child friendly centers, equipped with one Bangladeshi teacher and one Rohingya teacher, providing basic education to the young children in the community. Along with educational services, the centers also serve to provide the following:

  • Social & emotional development

  • Counselling for traumatized children

  • Entertainment

  • Health and hygiene materials (soap, washing powder, toothpaste and toothbrushes, etc)

Adolescent girls and boys clubs are also conducted in these spaces, facilitated by one Bangladeshi health educator and one Rohingya educator. These clubs provide essential counselling services to the older children in addition to providing them with similar health and hygiene education as well as life skills training.
